Redmire Pool

Travelling back to 1934, When the then owners of Redmire contacted a fish supplier by the well known Donald Laeney to introduce 50 small Carp to try control the weed in the pool. Now before we go any futher I think we all have heard of the 'Leneys' strain of carp and that is for a good reason. Leneys strain of Carp have produced some of the biggest known fish in the land and not just in Redmire, Leneys were stocked mainly around Southern England.
Up until 1951 these fish remained untouched at Redmire until a local angler by the name of Bob Richards managed to secure permission to fish the pool, This is where everything changed because on the 3rd October Bob was about to re-write history by capturing a 31.4lbs Mirror Carp.
Richard Walker the following year on September 13th managed to catch the now famous 'Clarissa' at a new record weight of 44lbs which smashed the carp record. Clarissa was transferred alive to London Zoo where she spent the next 19 years before her death. ( Click here to read more about Clarissa)
Chris Yates then managed to beat Richards record by landing a stunning 51.5lb Mirror.
As you can probably imagine Redmire has been fished by all the big names in the fishing industry and in those days was a very much a 'closed shop' the fishing was very private and mostly kept a secret.
